I have been using my Dell 3100cn printer for about 2 months now. I had previously had other color printers from Lexmark to Okidata. This was my first Dell printer even though I have been sticking with Dell pcs for the past couple of years. I was considering both the Dell 3000cn and the Dell 3100cn. I eventually decided on the 3100cn due to the higher dpi. The printer is rather fast for the affordable price. I was also impressed when I printed things at night - With other printers it seemed that I could wake up my neighbors when I started a print job.
With the Dell 3100cn, I think I could fall asleep in the same room as the printer. It is super quite and also efficient. I would definitely recommend it. Also - if you are looking to save some additional money don't bother shopping for the Dell 3100cn toner at Dell.com. I found that The Supplies Guys offfer a very affordable compatible alternative that kept the same quality prints as the Dell toner that came with the printer.

The Dell 3100cn printer is one of Dell's more significant contributions to small office productivity. This color laser printer competes well with the other laser printers on the market today, and in some ways even out performs them.
SPEED
The Dell 3100cn speed is among the top for color laser printers, though there are other printers that are faster. The 3100cn doesn't win any major points in color printing speed (color graphics printing speed is 4.21 PPM, color text 4.83 PPM) when compared with other comparable models. However, this Dell printer pulls ahead of the pack significantly in black graphics and black text printing, averaging 17.97 PPM with monochrome graphics and an amazing 21.95 PPM in black text. Traditionally, most small offices need a printer to primarily print in black with the occasional color graphic; as such, the Dell 3100cn definitely fulfills that need.
FEATURES
Dell didn't skimp on providing their color laser flagship with plenty of useful features. The printer's total capacity is 400 sheets, which includes a standard 350-sheet tray as well as a multipurpose 50-sheet tray. The printer’s monthly duty cycle is 45,000 pages, and small offices that would push the limit of that cycle may consider buying another feed tray to keep from constantly replacing paper.
The Dell 3100cn comes equipped with 64 MB of RAM, which is enough for most small offices of up to 10 or so people. The Dell 3100cn is of course network ready, and so should be easy to set up in your office. Connectivity options include USB 2.0, parallel, and Cat 5 networking.
SIZE/DESIGN
While the Dell 3100cn doesn't leave a huge footprint – only 16 square inches – its weight will make you want to make a permanent location for it. At 72 lbs, it’s certainly not a lightweight. Still the Dell's sleek black matte finish makes it more visually appealing than other printers' stark white or gray colors, and it tend to reduce the impact of the 3100cn printer's size.
PRICE
The base model printer retails for $788. Additional available options include the 500-sheet feeder tray ($229), and a duplexer ($300), all of which together make the 3100cn price go up to $1317. Toner is relatively cheap when compared to other laser printers, but can still be expensive; a full set of 3100cn toner from Dell costs about $315. Fortunately more inexpensive options are available, such as compatible ink, a full set of which is available through the Supplies Guys for $125.00.
Overall, the Dell 3100cn color laser printer is a great choice for the small office environment. With excellent speed, reliable quality, and a fair price, the 3100cn has proven to be a winner for the many offices that use it.
