Xerox Phaser 8650 Color Laser Review
The Phaser 8650 is arguably the best color laser printer on the market today. It offers extremely fast printing speeds in the color and black and white printing, superb quality, a huge paper capacity and an excellent price. What’s not to love?
To start, the speed of the Xerox Phase 8650 is amazing. With color performance at an industry-leading 30 PPM, it can crank out those color prints faster than most printers can black text. Black and white prints are produced at an even faster 37 PPM, which will make printing that end-of-year report quick and painless. For the busy office, it can also mean the difference between profitable productivity and aggravated employees waiting in line.
Xerox did not skimp on endowing the Phaser 8650 with traditional Xerox Solid Ink technology and hence award-winning print quality. Users of the 8650 can get intense color with subtle transitions, resulting in more realistic images and clear crisp text. What is more, the Xerox Phaser 8650 technology improves overall print quality and increase gloss; plus it takes advantage of image enhancement, intelligent calibration, and smart printing technology. Still, there are some areas that the 8650 could have been improved, especially considering its corporate pricing. For instance, in lab tests, the 8650 black and white quality was much better than its color. There were actually a few dropouts (white dots within the characters), though for the most part text was nicely formed. Very close lines merged into a solid block in certain line-art test. Also, some grayscale image came out dark and a little grainy, though there was minimal moiré and no banding. Finally, despite some good detail in shadows, the Phaser 8650 produced somewhat excessive dithering and a strong ochre tint, which tainted the color tests results.
The paper capacity of the Xerox Phaser 8650 is perhaps most appealing to larger offices, as it will only need refilled occasionally. The printer comes with a 900-sheet standard paper capacity, and there is an option to add a high capacity feeder which features a 2,500 sheet total input capacity to the 8650. That brings the total capacity of the printer to 3,400 sheets, certainly the industry leader.
The Xerox Phaser 8650, as well as it performs, is frankly a behemoth of a machine, weighing almost 150 pounds and measuring 26 inches wide and 25 inches deep. And while its sizable girth allows it to handle a variety of paper sizes, offices considering the printer will want a permanent location to place it. Due to its size this printer would not be good consideration for the small office environment.
For such a huge printer, the printer comes slightly underpowered in the area of memory. The Xerox Phaser 8650 comes equipped with a decent 192MB of RAM standard, but the memory is expandable only to 512MB. The processor speed was somewhat inadequate as well, with only 400 mhz processor. These statistics are great for most printers, but for the 8650, one would expect a little more.
The one main downside to the Phaser 8650 is that it is quite expensive to operate. A full set of 8650 ink (which includes all four 8650 colors: magenta, cyan, yellow, and black) costs a whopping $550.00 from Xerox. The only saving grace is supplies offered through discounters like The Supplies Guys, which offer much better prices. A full set of genuine 8650 ink costs only $340 through The Supplies Guys. This ink is OEM, which means it is actually manufactured by Xerox, and is not compatible or remanufactured.
