Phaser 8500 Toner? Or is it Phaser 8500 Ink?

There’s confusion among some people as to the classification of Xerox’s unique “solid ink” printer line, namely the Phaser 8500. Are they inkjet printers? Are they laser printers? It’s easy to see where this confusion would come in; Xerox makes their proprietary consumable for the Phaser 8500 in such a way as to sort of be both ink AND toner. The ink stick IS made of ink albeit in a solid form, but the process of applying the ink to the page is more like that of a laser printer. In addition the resulting prints are more like toner prints because they don’t streak or smear with moisture.

The truth of the matter is that Xerox Phaser 8500 printers ARE classified as laser printers, so as such you would be correct defining the consumables product as Phaser 8500 toner. However, Xerox has dubbed what would normally be “phaser 8500 toner” solid ink, so the officially correct name is Phaser 8500 ink. And so arises a printer paradox: a laser printer that uses ink.
